As one of the most beloved and enduring Christmas movies of all time, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation has become a holiday tradition for many families. Whether it’s the goofy antics of Clark Griswold or Chevy Chase fanatics reliving his hilarious slapstick glory days, there is no denying this 1989 classic has cemented its place as one of cinema’s greatest treasures.
But let’s face it, as iconic as Clark Griswold is to fans, Cousin Eddie steals nearly every scene he graces in this movie. Played by Randy Quaid in what some may consider the role of his lifetime (but more on that later), Cousin Eddie is a character who has been embraced by audiences everywhere since his first appearance in National Lampoon’s Vacation back in 1983.
So who exactly is Cousin Eddie? And why have fans been so drawn to him over the years?
The first thing you need to know about Cousin Eddie is that he loves animals. From his loyal dog Snots to the squirrel residing in his shirt pocket- “That last-out-of-the-patch feeling!”- Cousin Eddie shows considerable compassion towards Mother Nature. This makes sense given that wearing an oversized green coat with nothing but boxer shorts below certainly requires a certain level of courage and tenacity!
Eddie rocks quite distinctive looks throughout the entire film franchise., from sporting curvy Frankenstein glasses dotted with patches held together with scotch tape; absent shoes revealing black socks pulled up high until disappearing into shorts only reaching just above knee-level; downing can after can of cheap larger while never taking off his favorite beige trooper hat. It’s hard not to chuckle just thinking about this haphazard brand image alone!
And while cousin seems jovial enough around everyone else except maybe Ellen if she spots him openly ogling Catherine during her pool dance routine entirely obvious by lip reading: “Grab your ankles and pull your knees into your chest!”; what drives fans nuts is that there seems to be a layer of tragedy beneath the surface.
Eddie exists in an almost alternate reality, one where he cannot recognize how strange or antiquated his habits, fashion selection, jokes are. His oblivious sense of humor paired with enthusiasm for mundane things like lighting up his dickie as snowflakes fall evoke pity mixed with goodwill since we know deep down this cantankerous character means well even if it takes him longer than most to fully comprehend and adapt concepts better left in the previous decade.
It was no surprise when Eddie received so much love from funny movie lovers given Randy Quaid’s incredible portrayal of Edsel Swartz Griswold’s cousin. The Texas-born actor has had a storied career, but few roles have been as enduringly popular as Cousin Eddie.
Some consider Quaid’s unusual quirks destined to become famous long ago given such parts such as West aka Doc Holiday played by Val Kilmer in “Tombstone” or hapless pilot Russell Casse in 1996’s Independence Day where his psychopathological elements combined indicate years-long preparation for viewing audiences’ ultimate pleasure breakdowns on Christmas afternoon family gatherings!
Sadly though, life wasn’t easy for Randy off-screen. According to interviews Quaid went through some troubled times during production whilst struggling with addiction issues over two decades worth that seemingly culminated when fleeing the country amid allegations police had made unauthorized claims against him while mistakenly accusing him by latest revealing reports after nine years exiled near Canada alongside wife Evi pointing out they couldn’t receive full payout insurance benefits on losses at home back within areas they currently lived due previously covered items under short-term insurance premiums curated by agent arrested then jailed- talk about random chain reaction criminal pursuits!
Despite these troubles, Randy continued working regularly before vanishing entirely from the industry worldwide sometime after 2009 publicly claimed retirement falling instead into doing more voice over work, being arrested multiple times for various reasons like squatting in random homes because it was “cheaper than a one-star hotel”, oddly creating several social media profiles from false aliases apparently while reaching out to President Trump via Twitter. The irony that all of this sounds familiar given Cousin Eddie’s ignorance of his own issues is not lost on audiences globally.
All said and done, Eddie will forever be an iconic addition to Christmas cinema.; whether seen through positive or negative lenses in reruns forever embedding his unforgettable ineptitudes wrapped up with scatterbrained good intentions amidst hopeless attempts at socially acceptable behavior…Or wearing hats hiding bald spots and brown missing tooth caps rubbing against classic bowling ball trophies he proudly displays despite the entire world having moved onto digital peripherals long ago since none can truly predict how culture will evolve…Only that Randy Quaid’s character’s identity remains pertinent over three decades later, easily for decades more perhaps tracing back to unifying our primal imperatives causing confusion, joy,and mystery alike when together sharing strange absurdity amid spiraling daily pressures- oh so similar when gathered round multicolored lit Christmas trees while gleefully watching Eddie emptying poop tanks off RVs before hilariously jinxing Clark Griswold’s boss bonuses turning into jelly-of-the-month clubs!
