Albert Butz filed patent application no US252100A titled “Electric circuit controller,” dated May 12th of 1883 which is considered by many as marking the birthplace of modern heating controls technology, although he called it “apparatus for controlling gas lighting”.

Born into a buggy-making family (his father started holding patents since 1857), Butz moved into electrical contracting at age thirty-two after purchasing F.A Stratton’s company alongside two partners; however differences forced him out within six months but not diminished his career path ambition one jot.

He continued working on designing improved versions until finalizing with his own version designed around adjusting electric circuits opening or closing valves rather than dampers opening or closing depending on sensed variations.

These interior residential tools allowed people to easily heat, or cool their homes at the push of a button and Butz himself went on to co-found and become president of what is now known as Honeywell Corporation.

Johnson, an American engineer also played a prominent role in perfecting today’s thermostat device. Johnson was born in Wisconsin’s rural county, and his father died when he was only seven years old; thus experiencing life’s “hardships” earlier on.

In his adult years, he became interested in mechanics after trying out several professions such as farming -working for Knapp-Stout construction-, trading furs among others ultimately settling on inventing after creating a temperature regulator while being employed by Weary & Phillips’ electric company that triggered devices depending upon sensed thermal variations.
