Taco Bell is a fast-food chain serving Tex-Mex cuisine and was founded by Glen Bell in 1962. However, the story of who invented Taco Bell goes back much further than that.
Glen W. Bell Jr., born on September 3, 1923, started his career at age 12 working as a delivery boy for his father’s dairy business in California. As he got older, he continued to work for various food-related businesses before joining the Marine Corps during World War II.
After returning from the war and seeing rapid growth in the post-war economy, Glen decided to venture into creating his own restaurant concept. He observed how popular Mexican food was becoming but noticed there weren’t many fast-food options available at this time.
In 1951 at age 28 with just $4,000 borrowed from a friend, Glen opened up “A Drive-In” burger stand serving hamburgers and hot dogs in San Bernardino County, California – which later became known as “Bell’s Hamburgers & Hot Dogs.”
While running his first restaurant venture successfully over eight years through an emphasis on quality recipes and customer service alongside efficient operations for continually high-profit margins, one day he observed long line-ups next door at Mitla Café – the birthplace of taquito style tacos also located within San Bernardino County.
Being naturally curious about other cultures’ foods since childhood thanks to having friends from different backgrounds growing up together (and even playing kitchen), coupled with learning valuable marketing knowledge gained after leaving home very young — Glen popped over next door after closing hours aiming to gain some insights so that when they re-opened ready-to-go immediately satisfying those hungry costumers waiting outside. Indeed: soon enough there was another model sourced heavily being served-up too: crunchy-shelled Americanized Tacos were added to their menu; quickly becoming most requested items then responsible for carrying them towards full-time taco production—becoming our beloved concept that today represents Taco Bell!
Bell borrowed more money from a partner and opened the first stand-alone Taco-Tia restaurant in 1954, which he sold after a successful run of four years. He opened another Mexican-themed restaurant called El Tacos in 1958 before eventually selling that as well and starting his next venture which would, of course, become Taco Bell.
On March 21st, 1962 Glen W. Bell Jr. launched Taco Bell at the age of 38 with its first location in Downey, California. It was an overnight success due to its convenient locations near schools and a drive-thru system that made it easier for customers to purchase their tacos without getting out of their cars – catering towards those wanting fast food service during break-times or dinner hours.
The menu at the first Taco Bell included basic items such as crispy taco shells filled with lettuce, cheese and ground beef along with bean burritos all served hot with mild sauce on top and cold drinks offered in oversized transparent plastic cups; still available almost sixty years later – numerous changes have been implemented since then like introduction ‘Meximelt’ wrapping beans and melted cheeses alongside adding new combos over past decades throughout expansion phases across United States (and other countries worldwide).
In October of 1978 PepsiCo acquired plenty ownerships from Glen W. Bell Jr.’s beloved establishment thus grew tremendously: launching franchising services around country until there are now around 7 thousand franchises worldwide serving millions daily visiting dozens upon dozens flagship restaurants too (including recognizable options like “Taco Salad,” “Chalupa Supreme,” “Burrito Supreme” among others…)
For his invention(s), Glen Bell received honors such being named National Restaurateur Hall-of-Famer by Restaurants & Institutions Magazine plus being tapped for Prodigy Innovator Award bestowed by Nation’s Restaurant News amongst many other industry accolades too signifying one inspirational man’s passion leading towards an iconic building block (pun intended) of American food culture itself today.
